Daugavpils to more than double municipal apartment rents

The Daugavpils municipality has decided to raise rents for its apartments from 30 to 70 cents per square metre per month. As a result, a 50-square-metre apartment will cost 35 euros instead of 15 euros.

The city government in Daugavpils has decided to raise rents for municipal apartments. The monthly rate per square metre will increase from 30 cents to 70 cents, which is more than double the previous level. For example, tenants of a 50-square-metre apartment will now pay 35 euros instead of the previous 15 euros.

The local administration calls the measure unpopular but insists there is no alternative. Upkeep of the ageing housing stock costs the city hundreds of thousands of euros annually, and the current rent is not enough to cover those costs. Despite the expected increase in revenue, the council says it cannot yet estimate the exact amount that will be collected, as financial calculations are still ongoing.

All tenants renting municipal flats in Daugavpils will be affected by the change. For many families, the increase will add a noticeable burden to their monthly household expenses. The municipality has not announced any support or compensation schemes for those who may struggle with the higher rent. Officials have promised to provide more details after further financial analysis is completed.
