Riga closes Daugavpils Street section near building with dangerous structural damage
A section of Daugavpils Street in Riga has been closed over safety concerns after dangerous deformation was found in a building's load-bearing structure. Inspectors will assess the premises on Monday.
The Riga City Council has decided to close a section of Daugavpils Street near No. 8, citing safety concerns. The move follows the detection of a dangerous deformation in the load-bearing structure on the second floor of the building. According to the municipality, there is a real possibility that components of the structure could collapse onto the sidewalk or the road, posing a threat to passers-by and traffic.
The building in question is unoccupied and has previously been recognised as an object that detracts from the urban environment. In order to eliminate the potential danger to people's lives and health, the City Development Department, together with the Civil Protection Administration, requested the Riga Municipal Police to close the street section and set up a safety cordon around the hazardous site. These measures will remain in place until the relevant authorities make further decisions.
Building inspectors are expected to visit the site on the morning of Monday, 3 August. Their task will be to evaluate the technical condition of the structure and determine what additional safety steps are necessary. Until then, the city urges residents to follow the traffic restrictions and not to enter the cordoned-off area.
