Daugavpils Theatre's new season to feature performance in Polish for the first time
Daugavpils Theatre opens its new season in September with several premieres in different languages, including a Polish-language production planned for early next year — a first for the theatre.
Daugavpils Theatre will open its new season on September 5 with Danish director Kim Bjarke's comedy "Very Important Person (VIP)," which was the closing premiere of the previous season.
New season premieres
The first premiere of the new season is set for October 3 — a staging of Alexander Vampilov's play "Duck Hunting," directed jointly by Edgars Māliņš and Oļegs Šapošņikovs. Performed in Russian with Latvian subtitles, the existential drama explores complex relationships and themes of postponed life and uncertainty.
In early November, Norwegian director Terje Skunseng-Neuder's staging of Henrik Ibsen's "Ghosts" is scheduled to premiere. The cast includes Irina Kešiševa, Vladislavs Vasiļjevs, Mihails Samodahovs, Viktors Jancevičs and Alina Kalina.
Around Christmas, the repertoire will be joined by Jānis Lūsēns' children's musical "Thumbelina," featuring both Latvian and Latgalian language. The traditional New Year's concert will move to a new venue this year, the Daugavpils Culture Palace, allowing more spectators to attend. A small-format production directed by Vadims Bogdanovs is also planned.
Polish language for the first time
In early next year, the theatre will stage a production featuring Polish for the first time in its history, continuing its push to broaden the range of languages in its repertoire.
This season the theatre aims to strengthen ties with Baltic theatres, having begun talks with the Vilnius Old Theatre on exchanging guest performances, while continuing cooperation with Tallinn's Sõltumatu Tantsu Ühendus (Sidalinna) theatre. In October, the theatre will bring its production "The Seagull" to Riga, and in November it will take part in a festival in Biržai.
