De la Fuente signs Spain contract extension through 2032

Spain's national team head coach Luis de la Fuente, 65, has agreed a new contract with the Spanish football federation (RFEF) that keeps him in charge until 2032, replacing a previous deal that was set to run through 2028.

Under de la Fuente, Spain won the World Cup this summer, beating Argentina 1-0 after extra time in the final to claim their second global title. Two years earlier, his side had also won the European Championship, defeating England 2-1 in that final. The new contract ensures he will remain in charge for Spain's defence of their World Cup crown in 2030, when the tournament will be co-hosted by Spain, Portugal and Morocco, with a number of matches also staged in Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay to mark the competition's 100th anniversary.

De la Fuente took over the national team in December 2022, succeeding Luis Enrique after Spain's last-16 exit at that year's World Cup. Since then, the team has lost just twice in 41 competitive matches and claimed three trophies, including the 2022-23 Uefa Nations League. Spain finished runners-up to Portugal in the 2024-25 Nations League.

Speaking on Wednesday at the World Football Summit in Madrid, RFEF president Rafael Louzan said de la Fuente's results and work spoke for themselves, adding that the coach had previously not ranked among the ten best-paid in his role, which prompted the federation to offer him improved terms. Louzan noted de la Fuente has been with the federation for 14 years and that he wants him to be able to finish his career there.

Before taking the senior job, de la Fuente spent nine years working in Spain's youth setup, winning the European Under-19 Championship in 2015, the European Under-21 Championship in 2019, and a silver medal at the Tokyo 2021 Olympics.

Spain's next fixture comes on 26 September away to England at Wembley, opening their 2026-27 Nations League campaign.
