De Minaur falls to Norrie in Toronto Masters third round; Shelton lone top-10 survivor

Australia's top tennis player Alex de Minaur, ranked seventh in the ATP standings, was beaten by Britain's Cameron Norrie, the world No. 37, in the third round of the Toronto Masters. The final score was 7:5, 6:7, 1:6. Norrie had previously reached as high as No. 8 in the world rankings.

The 27-year-old Australian entered the match as the favourite, with bookmakers offering odds of 1.50 for his victory. De Minaur fought back from 1:4 in the opening set to take it 7:5. In the second set he built a 5:2 lead with two breaks, but Norrie recovered to force a tiebreak. De Minaur led 3:1 in the tiebreak but then lost five straight points, going down 3:5 and losing the set 5:7.

The statistics favoured Norrie throughout the match. De Minaur won fewer points behind his first serve (65% to 69%) and second serve (38% to 42%), and was outpointed 102 to 111 overall. He converted five of 13 break opportunities, while Norrie converted seven of 10. The ace and double fault counts were 3–5 versus 7–3, and winners to unforced errors were 32–46 versus 39–41. With this result, De Minaur's head-to-head record against Norrie now stands at 3–4.

Following De Minaur's exit, only one top-10 player remains in the Toronto Masters at the start of the third round: American Ben Shelton, who is ranked 10th. Shelton is scheduled to face Belgium's Zizou Bergs, ranked 34th, in the evening match.
