Fuel price hikes spark protests in several countries
The ongoing US-Iran conflict has driven up fuel prices worldwide, triggering protests in Syria and France, while governments look for ways to ease the impact.
As the military conflict between the United States and Iran continues, rising global fuel prices have sparked unrest and protests among residents of several countries.
Unrest in Syria
This month, Syria saw protests after the government decided to raise diesel prices. In euro terms, diesel prices rose from about 90 cents per liter to 1.25 euros per liter — an increase of roughly 40%. Gasoline prices rose by about a quarter. In response, residents burned tires and blocked roads.
Tension in France
France has also experienced tension over rising fuel prices, this time from fishermen, for whom fuel costs are a significant part of their operations. Protesters used similar tactics as in Syria, burning tires and blocking fuel depots, disrupting supplies.
Governments seeking solutions
The fuel price increases have created a difficult situation in multiple countries, and their governments are working on measures to soften the impact of higher prices on residents and specific industries. No concrete solutions have been announced yet, but the situation is considered urgent given how widespread and intense the protests have become.
