Prime Video's adaptation of God of War has a new leading man: Dave Bautista has been cast as Kratos, replacing the previously announced actor in the role.

The part had initially gone to Ryan Hurst, known for his roles in Sons of Anarchy and The Walking Dead. Production had advanced far enough that a teaser first look was released showing Hurst as Kratos alongside Callum Vinson as Atreus.

However, Hurst reportedly suffered an injury while performing a stunt on set. The injury was serious enough to require surgery, sidelining him for several months.

Last month, the production team decided to recast the role rather than delay filming until next year. Bautista had previously been rumored as the second choice for the part, and that speculation has now been confirmed.

The situation is a difficult one for Hurst, with hopes expressed for a smooth and speedy recovery. The show already carries a two-season order, with veteran producer Ronald D. Moore serving as showrunner, writer and executive producer.
