Demi Vollering claims second Women's Tour de France title
Dutch cyclist Demi Vollering won her second Women's Tour de France title on Sunday, taking victory in the final, ninth stage in Nice. This follows her first title win in 2023.
Dutch rider Demi Vollering has secured her second Women's Tour de France crown, capping off the nine-stage race with a stage win in Nice on Sunday. Crossing the finish line well ahead of her rivals, she lifted her bike into the air in celebration, having widened her overall lead by taking the final stage.
Polish rider Katarzyna Niewiadoma-Phinney, the reigning 2024 champion, finished second overall. She had begun the closing stage just eight seconds behind Vollering, but a time bonus awarded to the stage winner allowed Vollering to extend her advantage decisively.
Battle for third place
The race for the final podium spot shifted during the stage. Italy's Elisa Longo Borghini, a former Giro d'Italia champion, moved up into third place overall after Switzerland's Marlen Reusser lost significant time following a crash on a downhill section after the second of the day's four climbs.
Vollering first won the Women's Tour de France in 2023, and this latest victory confirms her position among the sport's leading riders.
