Latvia's demographic decline continues despite years of government promises
Despite promises from successive parliaments to improve Latvia's demographic situation, the country's population keeps shrinking — this year there are about 12,000 fewer residents than last year. Latvian Radio reviewed which pledges made by 14th Saeima politicians have been fulfilled and which have not.
Latvia's shrinking population remains one of the country's most persistent and difficult challenges. Despite years of political rhetoric about the need to boost birth rates, ensure dignified conditions for the elderly, and reduce emigration, the situation has not meaningfully improved.
Population continues to fall
Compared to last year, Latvia now has approximately 12,000 fewer residents. This figure shows that measures taken so far — including legislative changes and increases to various social benefits — have not been sufficient to reverse the negative trend.
Promises made, promises kept — and forgotten
Latvian Radio conducted a review of the pledges made by politicians of the 14th Saeima aimed at improving the demographic situation, examining how many of these commitments have actually been carried out. The investigation found that while some initiatives have been implemented, several important measures remain unfulfilled or have simply fallen off the political agenda.
Demographic decline has remained a pressing issue in Latvia for decades, touching not only birth rates but also questions of an aging population, social security for seniors, and the ongoing outflow of residents to other countries. Together, these three factors have a direct impact on the country's future economic and social stability.
