Depay slams Corinthians as 'unacceptable' after contract lapses

Dutch forward Memphis Depay has publicly accused Brazilian club Corinthians of unacceptable conduct after the club chose not to renew his contract, saying it broke a previously agreed deal.

The former Manchester United and Barcelona player joined Corinthians in 2024 on a two-year contract. Now that the deal has expired, the 32-year-old said on social media that a renewal had been agreed by the club president along with the sporting, legal and financial departments, but some individuals later decided to go back on that agreement.

Depay said he never wanted this situation and had always respected the club, but is now forced to defend his interests strongly and will not let the matter go unaddressed. He said he would make a public statement in the coming days.

Club's explanation

The Sao Paulo club, currently seventh in Brazil's Serie A, said the decision not to extend the contract was driven by financial considerations, arguing that taking on a commitment of that size would not be compatible with maintaining the club's financial sustainability. Corinthians acknowledged the decision was difficult but described it as necessary for the club's future. Club president Osmar Stabile is expected to hold a press conference in the coming days to explain the decision further.

During his time at Corinthians, Depay made 79 appearances, scored 20 goals, and helped the club win the 2025 Copa do Brasil as well as this year's Supercopa do Brasil. He remains the Netherlands' all-time top scorer but failed to score in three matches at the 2026 World Cup, where the national team was eliminated in the round of 32.
