One dead, eight injured in single day on Latvia's roads
Over the past 24 hours, 134 traffic accidents were recorded on Latvia's roads, leaving one person dead and eight injured. Police simultaneously stepped up enforcement as part of the ROADPOL Safety Days campaign.
Latvia's roads saw 134 traffic accidents over the past 24 hours, resulting in one death and eight injuries, according to State Police data.
Violations and enforcement
Traffic police issued 403 administrative violation rulings during the same period. More than a third of these — 143 cases — involved speeding, while one case involved aggressive driving.
Police also caught drivers operating vehicles under the influence of alcohol. Two of these cases resulted in criminal proceedings.
Europe-wide crackdown
The violations were recorded during ROADPOL Safety Days, an initiative by the European traffic police network. From September 16 to 22, police across Europe, including Latvia, are intensifying traffic safety enforcement. The campaign aims to reduce the number of deaths and serious injuries in road accidents.
State Police noted that even relatively minor speeding significantly increases the risk of an accident, since higher speed lengthens a vehicle's stopping distance — in a dangerous situation, just a few extra meters can prove decisive.
