Corruption charges dropped against employee of South Africa's police intelligence boss

South African prosecutors have withdrawn corruption charges connected to the appointment of Dineo Mokwele to a senior technical support services role within the Crime Intelligence division. Speaking outside court in Pretoria after the charges were dropped, Gen Khumalo, head of Crime Intelligence, told reporters he was relieved that "the truth at least is out".
Prosecutors had previously argued that Mokwele lacked the qualifications required for the position and described her appointment as a "token appointment". The matter subsequently came under scrutiny at the Madlanga Commission.
During the commission's hearings, it emerged that Mokwele was in fact well qualified for the role, holding around a dozen certificates. In July, Andrea Johnson, who previously headed a specialised unit within South Africa's National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) responsible for investigating high-level and complex corruption cases, testified before the commission.
Johnson admitted she had been unaware of Mokwele's actual qualifications and apologised for remarks she had made about her.
Gen Khumalo took over as head of Crime Intelligence in 2022, having previously served in various police units for more than two decades.
