With foreign workers gone, factories and the agricultural sector in South Africa are struggling with a shortage of labor. These industries had relied heavily on immigrant workers, and their sudden absence is making it harder for businesses to keep operating normally.
Empty small shops
At the same time, numerous small shops across the country have been left empty and closed — many of them previously run by immigrants. Local residents, meanwhile, lack the funds needed to start or take over such businesses, so the vacated retail spaces are not being filled by new owners.
As a result, South Africa's economy is facing difficulties on multiple fronts — from labor shortages in manufacturing and farming to a decline in small-scale business activity.
