South Africa's Bafana Bafana made history on Saturday by defeating South Korea 1-0 at Monterrey Stadium in Guadalupe, securing a spot in the World Cup knockout round for the first time ever. Thapelo Maseko scored the winning goal in the 63rd minute.

The team's group stage campaign was dramatic, featuring two red cards, one loss, one draw, and one win. Despite a disastrous opening match, coach Hugo Broos's side rallied to achieve their goal.

In Johannesburg, fans began celebrating at 3am local time, watching the match in pajamas and winter coats before pouring into the streets to dance. Supporter Lorenz Kohler said this moment surpasses the 2010 World Cup, when South Africa became the first host nation to fail to advance from the group stage.

Broos, 74, who plans to retire after the 2026 World Cup, called the victory emotional. He praised his team's belief and fighting spirit.

The South African government congratulated the team, highlighting their determination and discipline. Diplomats and politicians flooded social media with praise.

Fan Sahil Ebrahim noted that the 2010 celebrations were about hosting, but now the joy comes from pure performance. The team's next match is against Canada in Los Angeles.
