Diomande's rapid and remarkable rise to Real Madrid
Ivorian teenager Yan Diomande becomes the most expensive African player ever, joining Real Madrid for over £100m after a meteoric rise from obscurity.
After an eventful couple of months, one of football's top young prospects is about to get his wish of joining a European powerhouse. The 19-year-old Yan Diomande is signing with Real Madrid in a record-setting transfer. The Spanish giants will pay more than £100m for Diomande, making him a new record sale for RB Leipzig and expected to become a new record signing for Real Madrid. Simultaneously, Diomande becomes the most expensive African player in history.
His rise to stardom occurred in record time. Less than 18 months ago he was almost completely unknown, known only to scouts as a skinny winger who played for Florida's DME Academy, more renowned for basketball. Diomande had trials with Chelsea, Bournemouth, Crystal Palace, Rangers and Olympiacos but remained unsigned until picked up by La Liga side Leganes. Within a few months and 10 games in the Spanish top flight, his market value increased considerably, eventually signing with Leipzig for €20m.
The Red Bull-funded club believed they had acquired a diamond, and they were right. Almost from the start, Diomande looked like one of the most exciting players in the Bundesliga, scoring 13 goals and providing 10 assists in his first full season in Europe. Initially, Leipzig intended to keep him another year, but demand was too high. Liverpool, Paris St-Germain and finally Real Madrid showed such interest that the Bundesliga side had to agree to a deal.
A hyper-athletic and creative winger, Diomande is already considered among the best dribblers in Europe. His passing skills are underrated because he is a dribble-first winger. He can play on both wings. At Leipzig he connected well with right-back Ridle Baku and may look even stronger with support from Trent Alexander-Arnold and Marc Cucurella.
Diomande is not just marketable as a highlight reel, but also as a true rags-to-riches story. Growing up in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, he decided early to become a professional footballer. At age nine, he played for Inter Foot Sud Comoe, a club 70 miles from home, essentially living on his own with few resources. At 15, he moved to the United States, attending high school without speaking English. Numerous trials in Europe went nowhere. "Even the B teams in the MLS didn't want me," he later said. Once his visa expired and he had to return home, his fortunes turned when Leganes offered a professional contract.
Just as things improved, he faced tragedy when his 15-year-old sister Roxanne died shortly after his La Liga debut against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu. "Now, I don't feel anything. It's like I'm not even human," he wrote in a letter to her. The circumstances of her death remain unclear – he was told her drink was spiked at a party.
Despite the tragedy in spring 2025, Diomande continued his professional path. He moved to Leipzig a year ago and is now taking another huge step by joining Madrid. The Spanish giants weren't in need of another winger, but president Florentino Perez and management did not want to miss out.
That Diomande ends up in Madrid rather than Paris is a surprise. PSG was a club he admired as a kid – his father was a supporter. However, the anticipated move to PSG fell apart, and PSG voiced displeasure over the behaviour of Diomande's agents. There has been considerable noise off the field. Diomande switched representation from Maxidel (led by ex-winger Max Gradel) to Jay-Z's Roc Nation in February. Maxidel disputed the move, and a complaint was lodged with the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne. It may not be a coincidence that Roc Nation already represents two Real Madrid attackers: Vinicius Junior and Endrick. PSG officially withdrew from the race citing issues with the agency during negotiations. Diomande's upward trajectory looks set to continue in the Spanish capital.
