As discussion around Latvia's demographic situation grows more heated among the public and politicians alike, theatre company Dirty Deal Teatro has responded with a new production examining the issue through men's personal stories. The play, «The Stronger Sex» («Stiprais dzimums»), was directed by Toms Treinis.

About the production

Described as an evening-length study of demographics, the play features three young men sharing their own experiences with relationships, building families, and decisions around having children. The production raises questions about why the ancient call to "be fruitful and multiply" seems to have lost its resonance today, and why the number of Latvians has been declining for several decades.

Context

The staging arrives as concern over Latvia's demographic crisis has become an increasingly prominent topic in both public discourse and political debate. «The Stronger Sex» approaches the subject from a male perspective, which the theatre frames as a viewpoint less often heard in conversations about family and childbearing.
