Discussions continue over possible Latgale radio station as LSM drafts scenarios
Following calls from Latgale organizations and an audience study, Latvia's public media LSM is developing possible scenarios for a new Latgale radio station, though no final decision has been made.

This year has seen growing discussion about creating a separate regional radio station for Latgale, Latvia's eastern region. The debate was sparked by appeals from Latgale-based organizations, and Latvia's public media organization LSM has already begun drafting possible operational scenarios for such a station, drawing on an audience research study it conducted.
Latgalian language seen as central to content
The option currently considered most likely is a station whose programming would give significant space to content in the Latgalian language, along with music. However, no final decision on whether to establish the station or what form it would take has yet been made. Lengthy negotiations over funding, costs, and practical implementation still lie ahead.
Organization's initiative
Calls for a dedicated regional station have been actively discussed since the start of the year. In late January, the association "Latgolys Saeima" sent a letter to LSM's board, referencing previously published information that plans for this year included evaluating the feasibility of such a station. In its letter, the association argued that the new station's content should primarily be broadcast in the Latgalian language, emphasizing the importance of regional language and culture in shaping broadcast content.
The proposal for a Latgale radio station is being viewed within a broader conversation about preserving the region's identity and language, and about the role media organizations should play in that effort.
