Mineral del Monte, a small former mining town that has become a tourist destination partly due to its Cornish influence, claims that soccer in Mexico started there. However, the nearby city of Pachuca also asserts that the sport originated within its borders. Both towns are located in the state of Hidalgo and share a history of British immigration in the 19th century, when Cornish miners arrived to work in the local mines. Locals and historians suggest that these miners introduced the game, which later evolved into a national passion. As of now, no official decision has been made to settle the dispute. The rivalry has become a matter of local pride, with each side presenting evidence ranging from historical documents to photographs. While the true birthplace of Mexican soccer remains uncertain, the debate underscores how deeply the sport is embedded in the country's culture.
