Two storms, Austin and Bulu, have hit the United Kingdom this weekend. They have caused widespread transport disruption and power outages in Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England.

Wind warnings

The UK's national weather service has warned that Storm Bulu may create life-threatening situations, and people have been advised to stay indoors where possible.

A yellow warning for strong wind is in force across Scotland and northern England until Sunday evening. It is the second-highest level on the weather service's warning scale. Flood warnings have also been issued.

Transport disruption

The weather has disturbed several modes of transport, with problems reported for ferry and rail services as well as airport operations.

Sequence of storms and power supply

Storm Bulu arrived immediately after Storm Austin, which struck southern England on Friday. National Grid, which handles electricity distribution across the country, said that by 7 p.m. on Saturday power had been restored to more than 130,000 homes that Storm Austin had left without electricity.

The source does not specify how many homes are still without power, but reports say the number runs into the thousands.
