Two Australians Cross Shark-Infested Waters on Homemade Raft with a Portable Toilet
To save money on ferry costs, two men built a raft with a dry toilet and a grill, then spent four hours crossing the dangerous strait to Kangaroo Island.
Two Australian men came up with an unusual solution to avoid paying high ferry fees. Alex Craig, who is building a house on Kangaroo Island, decided not to spend a large sum on transporting a portable toilet. Together with his friend Paul Graham, they constructed a small raft powered by a nine-horsepower motor, attached a homemade dry toilet, and set off.
The adventure took place in May 2025. The journey lasted about four hours—much longer than the 45 minutes a ferry would take. But the men were satisfied with the result. They also installed a grill on the raft so they could enjoy food during the trip.
Craig posted a video of the unusual voyage on his YouTube channel in July. It sparked significant public interest. Graham said his phone "exploded" with calls after the video was published. He also announced that this would not be their last adventure together: "A sequel is already in the works," he told ABC Adelaide.
It is worth noting that the roughly 14-kilometer-wide strait between the Fleurieu Peninsula and Kangaroo Island is known for strong currents and high waves. Moreover, the waters are home to many sharks, including great whites. Since 2001, South Australia has recorded nine fatal shark attacks. Although no such tragedies have occurred near Kangaroo Island itself, media widely reported attacks on surfers in 2020 and 2025, where the victims managed to reach shore.
