A truck carrying beehives overturned on Sunday in Texas, near the town of Mauriceville in the eastern part of the state, releasing an estimated two million bees into the area. The Orange County emergency services issued a statement urging residents in the affected area to remain indoors due to the heavy presence of bees.
Photos posted online showed beekeepers in white protective suits working amid vast clouds of bees, with many insects clinging to nearby trees. The US often sees unusual loads involved in accidents. Earlier in June, a truck hauling fireworks caught fire in Tennessee, creating an impromptu display. In March, 40,000 pounds of extra-firm tofu spilled in Missouri, and in August, firefighters responded to a crash where a truck carrying a huge load of ribeye steaks burst into flames.
The Texas bee incident was resolved fairly quickly. The Orange County emergency services later updated that the bees were being transferred to local beekeepers and would be hauled to a local honey farm. Crews were continuing to safely transfer the hives onto transport trucks. The statement added that residents in the immediate area were still encouraged to use caution.
