Two participants in the Great North Run have died after falling ill during Sunday's half marathon, which took runners from Newcastle to South Shields.

The Great Run Company, which organises the event, confirmed both men were 25 years old and came from the north-east of England. According to organisers, the men collapsed on the course after becoming unwell, and despite efforts by the event's medical team, both died.

A spokesperson for the organiser said the exact causes of death have not yet been established and will be confirmed in due course. The spokesperson added that the organisation continues to support the men's families through this difficult period and extended sympathy to everyone who knew and loved them.

A major annual event

This year's race marked the 45th edition of the Great North Run, with around 63,000 people taking part in the half marathon between Newcastle and South Shields.
