Designers grapple with preventing inappropriate behavior in robotaxis

Autonomous vehicle designers are confronting the problem of passengers using robotaxis for adult content creation or other inappropriate behavior. Experts warn the risk varies sharply depending on a country's laws and culture.

Designers of autonomous vehicles, including Waymo and driverless public shuttles, are facing an unexpected challenge: riders using these vehicles for purposes they were never intended for. Researcher Rouchitsas points out that even though a passenger may be riding alone, a robotaxi isn't the private space it might appear to be.

He identifies two main scenarios of concern. The first involves adult content creators — working with platforms such as OnlyFans and Pornhub — who may view robotaxis and driverless shuttles as cheap, well-lit, partially soundproofed makeshift studios, given the US's large adult entertainment industry. The second involves tourists who may be unfamiliar with local customs and norms while traveling.

Cultural differences raise the stakes

Rouchitsas, who is originally from a Greek island, compares the situation to the kind of lax tourist behavior common among young travelers given the opportunity. He cautions that consequences can differ dramatically by country: in the US or Sweden, such behavior might simply cause offense, but in nations with very different legal systems — including several Middle Eastern and Asian markets where autonomous vehicle brands now operate — reactions could escalate well beyond mere offense.

Another complication is the shared-ride model used in some markets. A colleague of Rouchitsas noted that in India, riders often book a single seat rather than the whole vehicle, meaning passengers on a Waymo-style ride could end up sharing the car with strangers — adding another layer of privacy and safety considerations for vehicle designers to address.
