After Uruguay's failure to advance past the group stage of the World Cup, head coach Marcelo Bielsa stepped down, taking responsibility for the team's poor performance. Legendary striker Diego Forlán has been appointed as his interim replacement.

Forlán, who scored 36 goals in 112 appearances for Uruguay, has limited coaching experience. He previously managed Montevideo's Peñarol in Uruguay's top division in 2020 and second-division club Atenas in 2021. His playing career included stints at Manchester United, Atlético Madrid, Villarreal, Inter Milan, and Internacional.

Uruguayan Football Association (AUF) president Ignacio Alonso told Teledoce that Forlán is enthusiastic about the opportunity, and an agreement is expected within hours. Forlán will serve as interim coach until March 2027 and will also oversee the U-20 national team.

Uruguay finished the World Cup group stage with draws against Saudi Arabia (1-1) and Cape Verde (2-2), followed by a 0-1 loss to Spain, resulting in their elimination.
