DJI Mic 3 Wireless Microphone Shown in Ten Unconventional Uses

Video creator Jake Sloan demonstrates how the compact DJI Mic 3 wireless microphone can be used beyond a shirt clip: in cars, hats, as a makeshift boom and as a standalone recorder.

Video creator Jake Sloan, a content partner of the drone news site DroneXL, has published a video showing ten unconventional ways to use the DJI Mic 3, a compact wireless microphone normally clipped to clothing. The video was sponsored by DJI and contains affiliate links.

Cars and interviews

Sloan says the mic can be hidden in a car's engine bay, since much of the metal there is ferrous and the mic attaches magnetically. Near the exhaust it can be clipped to a mud flap or taped in place. The key is securing it well and keeping the small fuzzy windscreen on.

For in-car interviews, the mic can be tucked under the sun visor, near the sunroof, or taped to the console or rearview mirror. The aim is to get as close to the speaker's mouth as possible while staying out of the shot. The mic connects directly to DJI cameras without a receiver: up to two mics with the Action 4, 5 and 6 and the Pocket 3, 4 and 4P.

Other setups

  • Hat: the mic can be hidden inside a hat, and the audio stays consistent when the head turns.
  • Clothing: under several layers it can sit on the magnetic necklace, though fabric rustle can be a problem.
  • Phone or computer: a small receiver plugged into a USB-C port greatly reduces wind and other noise.
  • Standalone recorder: the mic records internally in 32-bit, so levels need not be set precisely. It suits events and weddings as a backup.
  • Handheld mic: useful for quick trade-show or street interviews, ideally with a larger foam windscreen.
  • Makeshift boom: Sloan attached it to a large selfie stick with bungee ties, about 12 inches from his mouth.
  • Four mics, two cameras: four mics can be paired to two receivers, and up to eight receivers are possible.

Sloan notes that DJI is currently running Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales.
