DJI unveils second-generation Romo robovac with new local privacy mode
DJI has announced its Romo 2 robot vacuum lineup, offering quieter operation, greater power, and a new local-only data mode following serious security issues with the first generation. Pricing and release date remain unannounced.
At the IFA trade show, DJI introduced the second generation of its Romo robot vacuum line, consisting of two models: the transparent P2 and the opaque A2. Both feature improved navigation that lets them detect and avoid very small obstacles, including cables as thin as 2mm, as well as transparent surfaces like mirrors and glass. DJI says the devices use a form of adaptive reasoning that allows them to learn from previously encountered obstacles and apply that knowledge to new ones.
Each model has two mechanical legs on its underside, enabling it to climb single steps up to 4cm high, or roughly double that height across two steps. This won't let the vacuums climb full staircases, but it should allow them to cross small thresholds and dividers between rooms.
On carpeted floors, the Romo 2 can generate suction of up to 36,000Pa, while redesigned brush and mop arms extend further to clean along furniture edges and baseboards. DJI also claims a significant noise reduction, citing an 85 percent drop in volume compared to the previous model.
Addressing past security concerns
The original Romo impressed on paper but was undermined by major security vulnerabilities that let outsiders access thousands of units globally, exposing home floor plans, camera and microphone feeds, and even granting full remote control. DJI eventually patched the flaws, but the incident damaged trust in the product.
To address this, the Romo 2 introduces a Local Data Mode, which DJI describes as a new industry standard for home robotics. Enabling it disconnects the DJI Home app from the internet, blocking any syncing of photos or camera footage. Users will also be able to fully disable the camera and microphone and delete stored data. The feature is set to roll out to Romo 2 devices in the fourth quarter of this year, with DJI planning to extend it to first-generation Romo units as well.
DJI has not yet revealed pricing or a release date for the Romo 2. A US launch appears unlikely, as existing restrictions have already blocked other recent DJI products from the American market, and a new FCC ban targeting foreign-made robot vacuums further reduces the chances of a US release.
