Police in Dobele Municipality Stop Audi Driver Carrying Child Half Out of Sunroof
Police in Zemgale stopped a car in which a child was hanging halfway out of a sunroof. The woman driver, born in 1992, received two fines for improper child transport and for carrying an unbelted passenger.
On August 12 at around 2:52 p.m., officers from the Western Zemgale station of the State Police’s Zemgale Regional Administration were monitoring traffic in Aizstrautnieki, Dobele Parish, when they spotted an Audi with a child leaning halfway out of the sunroof. The vehicle was stopped immediately, and the driver turned out to be a woman born in 1992; the passenger was a minor.
Police launched two administrative proceedings over the incident. The first was based on Article 79, Part 6, Item 2 of the Road Traffic Law, which concerns transporting a child shorter than 150 cm without a suitable child seat or booster cushion and without being fastened with a seat belt. The driver was fined 30 euros, although the legal range for this offence is 30 to 70 euros.
The second proceeding was under Article 51, Part 2 for carrying an unbelted passenger. The driver again received a 30-euro fine, with the same legal range of 30 to 70 euros.
The State Police reminded drivers that children shorter than 150 cm and around 12 years of age must be placed in a child seat or on a booster and must be buckled up. Police note that cases still occur where children are carried on laps or allowed to move freely inside the vehicle, endangering their lives. The public is urged to ensure the safety of young passengers on every trip, whether short or long.
