Dombrava reports to Prosecutor General's Office over costly flower bed at disaster management centers

Latvia's Interior Minister Jānis Dombrava has shared on social media platform X an example of what he describes as wasteful spending of public funds in the construction of disaster management centers. Among the most striking examples he cites is a small flower bed whose creation reportedly cost close to 3,500 euros.
A photo he published shows a modest patch of land planted with a few simple plants, though the stated cost has raised eyebrows.
Other violations also found
According to Dombrava, the flower bed is just one illustrative case. A review of individual construction projects for the disaster management centers uncovered other questionable cost items as well as repeated project cost overruns.
The minister said he has already referred these and other suspected violations to the Prosecutor General's Office. It was also announced that the official responsible has been removed from their post.
Minister's comment
In his statement, Dombrava stressed that the use of state funds must be justified and transparent, adding that inaction, negligence and mismanagement of public money cannot be tolerated.
No further details have yet been made public regarding which specific facilities showed the cost discrepancies or how the Prosecutor General's Office investigation will proceed.
