Oil Sheen Discovered in Driksa River in Jelgava

Following a report from local residents about possible oil product pollution in the Driksa, a branch of the Lielupe River in Jelgava, the State Environmental Service (VVD) promptly conducted an inspection. During the check, an oil sheen characteristic of petroleum products was observed in two locations near a stormwater discharge point.

The pollution was found across an area of about 50 square meters. To contain and collect the contaminants, absorbent booms were deployed in cooperation with the State Fire and Rescue Service (VUGD).

Water samples have been taken and sent to an accredited laboratory for testing to confirm the presence of oil products. Based on the city's stormwater sewer scheme, the likely source of the pollution has been identified.

The VVD continues to work with the Jelgava municipality institution "Pilsētsaimniecība", the Jelgava Municipal Police, and the VUGD to clarify the circumstances of the incident.
