A fire broke out at the Novokuibyshevsk oil refinery in Russia's Samara region overnight on August 22 following a drone attack, according to the independent Russian outlet ASTRA and several monitoring Telegram channels.
Local residents reported hearing air defense systems operating throughout the night and observing heavy smoke over the industrial area.
About the refinery
The Novokuibyshevsk refinery belongs to the Rosneft group and is one of the largest oil processing plants in the Volga region. Its designed capacity is around 8.8 million tonnes of crude oil per year. The plant produces various petroleum products, including jet fuel that supplies Russia's occupation army.
Previous attacks
This is not the first time the Novokuibyshevsk refinery has been targeted by Ukrainian drones. On April 17, strikes on the facility caused a major fire — according to Reuters, the plant was forced to halt operations at two primary oil processing units, AVT-11 and AVT-9.
On June 10, the plant was struck by drones again, after which it temporarily suspended crude processing.
