Dublin court remands Daniel Kinahan, one of the world's most wanted criminals, after extradition
Daniel Kinahan appeared before an Irish court on Sunday after being extradited from the United Arab Emirates, charged with directing a criminal organisation, and was remanded in custody until October 5.
An Irish government jet carrying the 49-year-old man, regarded as the leader of one of the world's most dangerous international drug and firearms trafficking networks, landed in Dublin on Sunday evening. He was arrested immediately upon arrival, and in court he was charged with directing a criminal organisation between October 2015 and April 2017.
The court hearing lasted around 13 minutes, after which he was remanded in custody until October 5 this year.
A long pursuit comes to an end
The man was arrested in the United Arab Emirates in April. His attempts to fight extradition to Ireland through the courts were unsuccessful. Ahead of transporting the high-risk detainee, Irish police had acquired a specially armoured, blast-resistant vehicle of the type used to escort the most dangerous criminals.
Cartel ties and international sanctions
Ireland's National Crime and Security Agency has previously stated that the cartel associated with the man is responsible for smuggling tonnes of drugs and firearms worldwide and has been linked to more than a dozen gang-related killings. US authorities have also repeatedly flagged the network's activities — the US Treasury Department has described it as one of the most dangerous in the world and imposed sanctions on the man in 2022.
