Data inspectorate: biggest risk lies in combining CSDD leak data with other sources
An official from Latvia's Data State Inspectorate has warned that people affected by the recent CSDD cyberattack face the greatest danger when criminals combine the stolen data with information from other databases.
Lāsma Dilba, deputy director of Latvia's Data State Inspectorate (DVI), said on Latvian Television's "Rīta panorāma" programme that people whose personal data was exposed in the recent cyberattack on the Road Traffic Safety Directorate (CSDD) should remain especially vigilant.
Combining data increases danger
According to Dilba, a single piece of leaked data may seem harmless on its own, but the real risk grows when fraudsters combine the stolen CSDD data with information obtained from other databases. Such combination allows a much fuller profile of an individual to be built, making it easier to carry out fraudulent schemes.
Caution recommended
The DVI representative stressed that residents should be careful in everyday situations — particularly when dealing with unclear phone calls, messages, or other attempts to extract additional information that could be paired with the already leaked data.
The institution is continuing to assess the scale of the cyber incident and the related risks for residents whose data may have been affected.
