England right-back Reece James sat out the team's last training session ahead of their World Cup knockout clash with Mexico. The Chelsea defender, 26, has missed the previous two games after picking up a hamstring injury in the closing stages of the goalless draw with Ghana.

James has not trained fully with the squad since the injury and was the only player absent from Saturday's session in Mexico City. The Football Association confirmed to BBC Sport that he is following an individual programme away from the training pitch.

There was better news regarding Jarrell Quansah, who has returned to full training and will be ready to face Mexico on Monday (01:00 BST). Quansah, capable of playing centre-back or full-back, suffered a hamstring problem in the draw with Panama. His recovery eases manager Thomas Tuchel's concerns at right-back.

Djed Spence was deployed at right-back in the victory over DR Congo, but midfielder Declan Rice finished the match in that position. Rice has been managing a hamstring issue but is expected to be available for the match at the Azteca Stadium.
