James Norton to play Hamlet in the West End – a privilege and terrifying challenge
Actor James Norton will make his West End debut in Shakespeare's Hamlet next autumn, directed by Thomas Ostermeier. Norton calls it a 'privilege' and 'pretty terrifying'.

James Norton, known for the series 'The King & Conqueror', is set to take on his first major Shakespearean stage role, playing Hamlet in the West End in autumn 2027. The production will be directed by acclaimed German director Thomas Ostermeier, who first staged his version of Hamlet in 2008. That production visited London in 2011 with Lars Eidinger in the title role, who famously prowled the audience and snatched a critic's notepad.
Norton's last stage appearance was in 2023 in the harrowing 'A Little Life' based on Hanya Yanagihara's novel, which he described as the hardest thing he has ever done. Now returning to the stage with Shakespeare, he said: 'It’s a privilege for anyone to take on the role of Hamlet. It’s also pretty terrifying! But with Thomas Ostermeier at the helm, I know I could not be in better hands.'
Ostermeier, who has been based at Berlin's Schaubühne since 1999, commented: 'I am pleased to be revisiting Hamlet for the West End… It will be my first time directing Shakespeare in English, and I am excited to explore the original text in order to bring this new production to life. My first Hamlet has been touring the world for 18 years so I am honoured to have the opportunity to bring it here to London with James, who in my mind is a perfect Prince of Denmark.'
Norton's previous Shakespeare experience includes playing Don Pedro in 'Much Ado About Nothing' at Cambridge University in 2006, directed by Robert Icke, and Posthumus in 'Cymbeline' at Cambridge Arts Theatre in 2007, directed by Trevor Nunn. In 2016, he starred as Richard II in a short film for the Globe's 'Complete Walk' series.
Hamlet is produced by Wessex Grove and Gavin Kalin Productions. Venue, dates, and further casting details are yet to be announced.
