Rail freight volume in Latvia drops 18.5% in first five months
In the first five months of 2026, Latvia's rail freight volume fell by 18.5% year-on-year to 3.067 million tonnes, according to the Ministry of Transport.

Data from Latvia’s Ministry of Transport shows that rail freight volumes in the country totaled 3.067 million tonnes in the first five months of 2026, an 18.5% decrease compared to the same period in 2025.
International freight accounted for 2.4 million tonnes, down 23%, while domestic freight rose by 3.1% to 667,000 tonnes.
Transit cargo amounted to 2.02 million tonnes, a 17.4% decline. Of this, transit through ports was 1.691 million tonnes (down 16.9%), and land transit via Latvia’s territory totaled 329,000 tonnes (down 19.8%).
Export shipments fell 2.1 times to 255,000 tonnes, while imports decreased by 16.8% to 1.816 million tonnes.
To note, the full-year 2025 rail freight volume was 9.454 million tonnes, a 17.6% drop from 2024.
