Rail works to add an hour to South Estonia–Tallinn morning train journey
From August 31, the morning train from Põlva and Koidula to Tallinn will take about an hour longer due to a longer transfer wait in Tartu. Elron says the change is due to repair works on the rail infrastructure between Tapa and Tartu.
Starting August 31, the morning train schedule between South Estonia and Tallinn will change, extending the journey noticeably for passengers, according to Estonian public broadcaster ERR's Russian-language portal, citing Delfi.
The main reason is a change to the connection in Tartu: instead of the current ten-minute wait, passengers will need to wait 47 minutes for the next train.
New schedule
Under the new timetable, the train from Koidula will depart at 6:10 and from Põlva at 6:44, arriving in Tartu at 7:33. The train to Tallinn will not leave until 8:20, reaching the capital at 10:50.
As a result, the journey from Põlva to Tallinn will grow from three hours and six minutes to four hours and six minutes, while the trip from Koidula will lengthen from three hours 40 minutes to four hours 40 minutes.
Reason for the works
Rail operator Elron explains the changes are due to repair works on the rail infrastructure between Tapa and Tartu. Because of signalling system upgrades and the resulting restrictions, the first morning express cannot leave Tartu earlier than 8:20.
The company expects to restore the previous schedule by November 2.
