Namecheap outage caused by cooling failure at Phoenix data center
A storm-damaged cooling system at a Phoenix data center knocked out Namecheap hosting, DNS and email services, with the company aiming to restore access by mid-afternoon.
Domain registrar and hosting provider Namecheap experienced a significant service outage on Wednesday after a cooling system failure at a data center it uses in Phoenix, Arizona. The disruption affected multiple services, including the company's own website.
PhoenixNAP, which operates the data center, said it was seeing elevated temperatures in its "white space" area as a result of damage caused by heavy overnight storms in the city.
Services affected
The outage hit several Namecheap offerings, including its hosting plans, the EasyWP platform, DNS services and email clients. Some services became entirely unreachable for a time, while others suffered delays in processing. The widespread issues also affected the company's customer support tools, making it harder for affected users to get help.
Company response
Namecheap CEO Hillan Klein posted an update on X saying that, based on current conditions, the company expected to begin bringing customer services back online at approximately 3:00–3:30 PM ET. In a later update, he said temperatures at the facility were continuing to fall, the cooling process was taking effect, and teams had begun work to bring services back based on the progress observed.
Customers still experiencing problems later in the day were advised to check the company's social media accounts for further updates.
