Dzintari Concert Hall to cancel or postpone events during red weather warnings
Dzintari Concert Hall has added a clause to its new lease agreements stating that events will be cancelled or rescheduled if a red weather warning is issued. Latvia's Culture Ministry plans to first consult industry organizations before introducing any broader regulation.
Dzintari Concert Hall in Jūrmala has updated its lease agreements to include a new rule for extreme weather situations. Under the change, any event scheduled to take place at the venue while a red weather warning is in effect will no longer proceed as planned — it will either be automatically cancelled or moved to a different date.
The venue's director, Iveta Grigule-Pēterse, shared details of the new policy with the Latvian Television programme "Kultūršoks". The move suggests that individual venues are beginning to set their own clear procedures for handling hazardous natural conditions, rather than waiting for state-level rules to be introduced.
Ministry not yet rushing to regulate
Latvia's Ministry of Culture is not currently in a hurry to introduce new, industry-wide regulations governing how cultural events should be organized during natural disasters or severe weather. Before drafting any such rules, the ministry intends to hold discussions with the Latvian Council of Event Organizers and Producers to agree on an approach that could apply across the sector.
For now, individual venues — including Dzintari Concert Hall — remain free to decide independently how to respond when weather conditions turn dangerous. Dzintari's new lease provision could serve as a reference point for other venues while the industry awaits a more unified, sector-wide framework.
