Intoxicated driver detained in Dzirciems after crashing into barrier and trying to flee

In the early hours of 26 July, Riga Municipal Police officers responded to a call in the Dzirciems neighbourhood. A man had reportedly driven a Volvo into a barrier and was attempting to leave the scene of the crash.
When officers arrived, witnesses pointed to the driver, who had run into the courtyard of an apartment building. Police soon caught up with him and ordered him to stop and get into an operational police vehicle. The man refused to comply multiple times, prompting officers to request additional municipal police backup.
Shortly after the extra unit arrived, the suspect was detained and placed in the police vehicle. Even after being placed in the vehicle, he kept resisting, attempting to leave the police car unauthorised and run away again, but without success. Given what had happened, the State Police were called in and took over further procedural actions.
Because the man repeatedly failed to obey lawful police demands, Riga Municipal Police initiated an administrative violation process. Further details about possible additional penalties or restrictions have not been disclosed.
