Jolie and Pitt's Daughter Vivienne Officially Drops Her Father's Surname
The 18-year-old daughter of Hollywood actors Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt has had her father's surname removed from her name by a California court. She is the fourth of the couple's children to take this step.

A California court on 2 November approved a request by Vivienne, the 18-year-old daughter of Hollywood actors Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, to change her name, People magazine reports. Her legal name will now be Vivienne Marcheline Jolie rather than Vivienne Marcheline Jolie-Pitt. She is the fourth of the couple's children to legally drop their father's surname.
She filed the petition in July, shortly after turning 18. As early as May 2024, the program for the Broadway musical "The Outsiders", which she helped produce together with her mother, listed her simply as Vivienne Jolie.
Other children have changed their names too
Shiloh, now 20, was the first to do so, filing her request in 2024 as soon as she came of age. This September a California court also approved the request of 21-year-old Zahara, who is now officially Zahara Marley Jolie. She filed the petition on 9 June, though the paperwork had been prepared by late April. Also in September, the name change of 25-year-old Maddox took effect, and he is now Maddox Chivan Jolie.
The couple have six children: Maddox, Pax (22), Zahara, Shiloh and twins Vivienne and Knox (18).
Background of the parents' relationship
Jolie and Pitt split in 2016 after 12 years together, two of them as a married couple. They reached a formal divorce settlement only in December 2024. Family relations have long been affected by an incident that allegedly took place on a private plane on 14 September 2016, when the actor reportedly behaved inappropriately toward one of the children. A Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) inquiry ended with no further action against him, and the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services found no abuse of children.
According to People's sources, Pitt has very little contact with his adult children, and another source confirmed in September that communication remains very limited. Yet another source told the magazine this was the result of years of the children being turned against one parent. Jolie has repeatedly said that what matters most to her is her children's independence and their freedom to find their own path.
