Congo's Ebola outbreak surpasses 5,000 cases as spread outpaces containment
The Democratic Republic of Congo's Ebola outbreak has now exceeded 5,000 recorded cases, spreading faster than any Ebola outbreak on record.
According to figures released by the Congolese government, the country's ongoing Ebola outbreak has now reached 5,021 confirmed cases, with 2,378 people having died from the disease.
The scale and pace of this outbreak set it apart from every previous Ebola event on record: both the number of people infected and the number of deaths have accumulated faster than in any prior outbreak of the virus.
This rapid trajectory indicates that current response and containment efforts on the ground are struggling to keep pace with how quickly the disease is spreading, with the situation continuing to worsen faster than authorities have been able to bring it under control.
