Latvian waste management company Eco Baltia vide has invested €681,000 in electric specialized vehicles for waste collection. The goal is to boost the company's operational efficiency while gradually reducing the environmental impact of its collection fleet through zero-emission technology.

The new electric vehicles will join the company's existing specialized transport fleet and will be used to provide waste management services in the South Kurzeme region, primarily for collecting separately gathered biodegradable waste. The vehicles will be based at the company's Liepāja branch, where charging infrastructure for electric vehicles will also be built as part of the project.

Lower energy use and emissions

According to the project's calculations, the new electric vehicles will consume roughly four times less energy than a comparable vehicle running on alternative fuel. Powered by renewable electricity with certified origin guarantees, the vehicles will achieve particularly low emission levels and high energy efficiency, cutting both resource consumption and the fleet's environmental footprint.

Andris Ziemelis, director and board member of Eco Baltia vide, said the electrification of the specialized vehicle fleet is part of the company's long-term approach, which weighs technology development from both a business-efficiency and resource-consumption perspective. He noted that modernizing the fleet allows the company to increase service capacity while gradually lowering emissions.

Aim to boost recycling volumes

The project aims to increase the volume of separately collected biodegradable waste by 1,100 tonnes per year, directing more waste toward processing and recovery rather than landfill disposal.

The project, called "Acquisition of electric vehicles for biodegradable waste transport," is supported by Latvia's Central Finance and Contracting Agency with funding from the European Union Cohesion Fund, which covers 54.47% of the project's total eligible costs.
