Dinner ideas for when there is almost nothing at home
Latvian daily Latvijas Avīze has published a collection of meal ideas for evenings when the fridge is nearly empty and a trip to the shop is not possible or wanted. The article argues that filling dinners can be made from ordinary, long-lasting staples.

On 12 October, the Latvian newspaper Latvijas Avīze published a recipe article titled as a list of nine dishes that can be made when there is "truly nothing" at home. It is aimed at everyday situations, such as an evening after work or a weekend morning, when a look in the fridge shows a shop trip is needed but the reader does not feel like going or cannot go.
Which ingredients are meant
The introduction describes a typical case: a dried-out piece of cheese left in the fridge, the sausage already eaten, and a lone onion and potato in the vegetable drawer. In the cupboard are products that seem too plain for anything special.
The authors stress that such supplies can sometimes produce perfectly decent, filling dinners. They say there is no need for salmon, cream, mozzarella or the other products usually named in recipes with grand titles. A few very ordinary ingredients, which many households keep for weeks, are enough.
Topics
The article is tagged with potatoes, semolina, recipes, rice and onions, which points to the main ingredients involved. The text available here does not include the list of the nine dishes themselves.
