Freddie Meredith's Edinburgh show turns social awkwardness into an hour of comedy
Actor Freddie Meredith is performing a one-hour comedy show at the Edinburgh festival about a man clumsily trying to make conversation in a nightclub smoking area. The show blends cringe humour with warmth and runs at Pleasance Courtyard until 30 August.
At this year's Edinburgh festival, actor Freddie Meredith, known for TV roles in Big Boys and Such Brave Girls, is presenting a new solo show called Need a Light?, built around one of the most relatable social discomforts: trying to strike up conversation with strangers who seem uninterested in talking back.
The show follows Meredith's character, a shy and insecure man desperately attempting to appear socially confident while repeatedly failing. Dressed in an effort to look trendy, dreaming of appearing in the audience of Top Gear, and secretly shopping online for clothing, the character initially resembles a familiar awkward comedic type. As the hour unfolds, though, a more sympathetic and layered personality emerges.
Awkward exchanges with the audience
Throughout the hour-long performance, Meredith interacts directly with audience members, who play fellow nightclub patrons. His clumsy attempts at small talk — including asking about house parties or requesting company for a trip to the toilet — generate both laughter and discomfort, eventually building into inventive and amusing set pieces, including one involving a karaoke duet.
The review notes that some sketches push the show's premise to its limits, but overall the performance is carried by the tenderness with which Meredith portrays his character — a loner repeatedly trying, and failing, to master social skills that come naturally to others. The show is staged at Pleasance Courtyard and runs until 30 August.
