Edward Lucas: Britain's Allies Frustrated with Political Chaos, Want Decade of Turmoil to End
Commentator Edward Lucas argues that the United Kingdom's allies are annoyed by the country's decade-long political chaos and desire its conclusion.

The old joke about "fog in the Channel, continent cut off" is no longer amusing, as Britain's political instability worries its allies. Uncertainty over US military commitments to Europe and the near-certain Russian threat place the UK at the center of defense and security discussions, but British leaders are complacent and self-absorbed.
Half of the past decade was spent on Brexit, followed by Boris Johnson's government implosion, and now Keir Starmer's time at Downing Street has ended. Both leaders won landslide elections (Johnson in 2019, Starmer in June 2024) but failed to deliver stability. Eccentric left-wing Greens, Nigel Farage's Reform party, and the far-right Restore party are gaining popularity.
A country once synonymous with political stability and strong institutions has tarnished its reputation. Britain's allies want this decade of chaos to finally end.
