England women's cricket head coach Charlotte Edwards has stated that the team has won back the fans during the World Cup, despite a heavy defeat to Australia in the final at Lord's.

Edwards, herself a former World Cup-winning captain, took over after England's disastrous Ashes campaign in 2025, where they were thrashed 16-0 in the multi-format points series. During that series, England faced heavy criticism over their fitness and fielding, and the team's attitude and perception were also questioned.

After the final defeat, Edwards spoke honestly about her desire to change that narrative and expressed pride in how the team turned things around. "I couldn't be prouder of my group or where we're at," Edwards told BBC Test Match Special. "People are talking positively about this team now whereas they weren't when I took over, and that is because of the work and effort that the players have put in behind the scenes."

England set Australia a target of 151 runs, but the Australians chased it down with ease, reaching the target in 17.1 overs with Beth Mooney scoring 64 off 49 balls. Edwards admitted that despite improvements, her side was outclassed on the day. "They are a very, very good team and we were completely outplayed there in the end," she said.

Captain Nat Sciver-Brunt was visibly emotional in her post-match interview, almost holding back tears. She echoed Edwards' pride in the team and backed them to bounce back. "It's a tough one to take but we'll be back," Sciver-Brunt said.

Edwards noted that Australia have set the blueprint for the rest of the world, but she remains confident about England's future. "We've won back the fans, because they've come out to watch us today, which is outstanding," Edwards added. "We're not talking about fitness or fielding anymore; I wanted us to talk about the cricket. Our time will come."
