Egypt Claims First World Cup Victory, Beats New Zealand 3-1

Egypt secured a historic first win in a World Cup finals tournament on Sunday in Vancouver, defeating New Zealand 3-1. In other Group G action, Belgium and Iran played a goalless draw, while Group H saw Uruguay and Cape Verde share the spoils in a 2-2 draw.

Egypt's national football team achieved a historic milestone on Sunday, recording their first-ever victory in a World Cup finals tournament by defeating New Zealand 3-1 in Vancouver. New Zealand took the lead in the first half through Fin Surman's header from a corner kick. Egypt responded in the second half: Mostafa Ziko equalized, and shortly after, Mohamed Salah put Egypt ahead following Ziko's assist. In the closing stages of regular time, Trezeguet doubled the lead from Salah's corner kick.

In another Group G match, Belgium and Iran played out a goalless draw. After two rounds, Egypt leads the group with four points, followed by Iran and Belgium with two points each, and New Zealand with one point.

In Group H, Uruguay and Cape Verde drew 2-2 in Miami Gardens. Cape Verde took the lead through Kevin Lenini's free kick. Uruguay equalized through Maximiliano Araujo's close-range rebound and then took the lead with Agustin Canobbio's goal from Araujo's cross. In the second half, substitute Helio Varela equalized for Cape Verde after capitalizing on the opposing goalkeeper's error.

After two rounds, Spain tops Group H with four points after a 4-1 win over Saudi Arabia. Uruguay and Cape Verde have two points each, while Saudi Arabia has one point. The World Cup, featuring 48 teams, is being held across Mexico, the United States, and Canada. The group stage concludes on June 27, followed by the knockout rounds. The semifinals are scheduled for July 14 and 15, with the final taking place on July 19.
