Egypt and Iran will play a decisive Group G match at the 2026 World Cup in Seattle on Friday evening. Led by Mohamed Salah, Egypt can reach the knockout stage for the first time in 92 years if they beat Iran, while a draw may also suffice depending on other results.

Egypt arrives after their first World Cup win, 3-1 over New Zealand. Iran has recorded back-to-back draws despite a complex geopolitical situation—the United States, a co-host, is at war with Iran, leading to travel restrictions. Iran’s team was only allowed to travel to matches in the US within 24 hours of kickoff and must return to their base in Mexico immediately. Restrictions were eased for this match, but Iran’s football federation reported problems.

Egypt coach Hossam Hassan, a former striker, tries to ease pressure on Mohamed Salah, who is one goal away from becoming Egypt’s all-time top scorer (69 goals). Hassan stressed that the team does not rely solely on stars and that Salah’s new playing style gives him more freedom.

Iran coach Amir Ghalenoei acknowledged that restrictions physically affected the team but said the players are now fitter. He stated the team is focused on a positive result and wants to bring joy to their people.

According to Opta’s supercomputer, Egypt has a 44.1% chance of winning, Iran 24.6%, and a draw 31.3%. In Group G, Egypt has 4 points, Iran 2, Belgium 2, and New Zealand 1. The top two teams from each group and the eight best third-placed teams advance to the round of 32.

The match will be broadcast live on various channels depending on the region, including BBC in the UK and FOX in the US.
