Europe Faces Competitiveness Crisis – Macron and Leaders Discuss Future Strategy

Last October, the Copenhagen competitiveness summit brought together French President Macron, EU Commission President von der Leyen, the prime ministers of Poland and Denmark, and 28 top European business leaders to discuss how Europe can maintain its competitiveness in the global economy. Rising US protectionism, Chinese competition, and security threats are pressuring Europe to act, but slow approval processes, fragmented regulation, and barriers in the single market hinder progress.

Last October, the Copenhagen competitiveness summit gathered European political and business leaders. French President Emmanuel Macron, together with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, met with the heads of 28 of Europe's largest companies. The summit's goal was straightforward – to discuss how Europe can remain competitive in an increasingly tough global economy.

Economic pressure on Europe has only intensified recently. US protectionism is becoming more pronounced, competition from China is fiercer, and security threats are increasingly directly affecting the daily lives of Europeans. At the same time, Europe continues to burden itself with slow approval processes, fragmented regulations, and barriers within its single market.

Participants acknowledged that Europe can no longer afford to hesitate. The good news is that European businesses are ready to engage in solving the problems. Although specific solutions were not disclosed, the meeting indicates a growing awareness that reforms are needed for Europe to compete with the US and China.
