Europe marks a day without road traffic deaths in road safety campaign
European Union countries, including Latvia, are taking part in an action today aimed at going a full day without road deaths or serious injuries. In Latvia, 66 people have already died in traffic accidents this year.
European Union member states, including Latvia, are today taking part in the "European Day Without Road Deaths and Serious Injuries" campaign, the State Police reported. The goal of the initiative is to ensure that not a single life is lost and no one suffers serious injury on Europe's roads during this one day.
Part of a week-long campaign
The single-day action is part of a broader initiative by the European Roads Policing Network, Roadpol, called "Roadpol Safety Days," running from Wednesday through September 22. During this period, police forces across Europe, including in Latvia, are paying heightened attention to road safety.
Concerning statistics in Latvia
According to the State Police, 66 people have already died in traffic accidents in Latvia this year, while 175 road users have suffered serious injuries.
Focus on vulnerable road users
As part of the campaign, special attention is being given to more vulnerable road users — pedestrians, cyclists, and riders of mopeds and electric scooters. Police are also stepping up checks on seatbelt and child car seat use, as well as compliance with speed limits.
